bad timing

this year was a terrible time to do this blog apparently. hahah. oooh well. here is something completely peripheral, for no good reason other than i wrote it for a performance evening i hosted the other night in case no one got up the nerve to perform and i had to fill dead air. (luckily we had more than enough performers, so it has remained safely tucked away!) ...until now i guess.

i spied a shadow
fathoms down
a million miles below the ground
the wind, she whispered,
"don't, you'll drown"
but i could hear a different sound..

the faintest rhythm
softest pound
a heartbeat?
locked
in
ancient rocks
the ticking of ten thousand clocks
and on the door, an old hand knocks...

"i say, you see, that you and me,
well we've got somewhere else to be"
before i knew he had my hand
he'd pulled me under
past the sand
beyond the light
beyond the land
down
down
into
the depths

it seemed that
as the rhythm grew
it played a song that i once knew
before i forgot
what was True...

but nevermind!
now here's the light
she's stolen darkness
from the night!
and taken, too
that tune so True
(the one i think i thought i knew)

oh treachery!
(or is it love?)
it's hard to tell here, up above
what looks like purple might be blue
what looks like nonsense might be True
in any case, that wild shrew--
the Morning, with
her blinding hue,
she always seems to
fade to black
retreats and greets the darkness back..

they lay out on a bed of dew
a dreamscape blank,
a canvas new
a gift for me
(a chance for you)
to spy the spectral shadow there
the one that sank down dans la mer
to follow my Friend
to his lair
where
the rhythm pulses in the rocks
the ticks keep time with all the tocks
the mystery's at last unlocked
down
down
into
the depths
